Lockdown Letters - April-June 2020
Beatboxing once more seems to be one of the most adaptable art, taking from physical to virtual, with the ideal concept of communication and connectivity and we have transferred all our assets from The Beatbox Collective to UK Beatbox Championships online, amidst the current climate to engage across as many platforms and keep business as usual.
- The Beatbox Collective have been operating our workshops online for private 1 on 1 beginner to advanced classes and even delivered a schools workshop live, to over 2000 people through Young Voices
- We setup Spotify's LA offices battling their New York team as well as Singapore and Australia in a live online beatbox battle for some team building activities.
- The first ever Online UK Beatbox Championships edition was a huge success. Organised by Hobbit, co-hosted with Mc Zani and judged by Bass6 it ran over 2 evenings, with over 70 competitors entering and prizes from Shure and Voloco.
- The week of the London marathon we worked with 2 chosen charities and had more than too much fun with the absolutely incredible energy of the Electric Umbrella team, exchanging funny sounds, singing and dancing along non stop.
- We streamed through LIVEFORLOVE and raised over £140 for UK foodbanks and as our first live freestyle session was so much fun... that we did it again to create awareness with SAVEOURVENUES a week later.
- Ball-Zee (whilst still in India!) has released the first ever(?!) beatbox scratch vinyl in collaboration with multiple word champion and straight up legend DJ WOODY - Available on Woodwurk Records. He has also been teaching workshops online, practising new routines and finger drumming and eating plenty of mangos!
- Bass6 has been writing, recording voice overs and sound fx and running online team building workshops, delivering talks and judged the UKBC: Online Edition.
- Bellatrix has been adapting to the online world and live-streamed for organisations such as Lock Down Your Aerial, Sunday Assembly and Bristol Live. She Judged the Francophone online beatboxing battles and took part in the BoxCon Global panel discussion on gender equality in beatboxing. She will be joining another one of these on 24th June so tune in to Boxcon Global. She has been continuing her work with young people in hospital via the project Vocal Beats, which has also moved online for now. She has also been curating playlists and continuing to write her own new music, which she will be showcasing through live stream later in the year. - Hobbit is now on his 23rd Show of Lock Down Your Aerial, a weekly online show showcasing artists, musicians and creatives co-created and hosted by himself and Dan Tsu (Lyrix Organix). He has also been working hard creating online collabs with artists such as Joshua Whitehouse and Gnarly and has released a single called "One Way" available on all platforms now!
- MC Zani has been working on numerous projects the past few months. From Vocal beats with the NHS, collaborations with numerous artists, judging online beatbox battles, appearing on lockdown your aerial, delivering online beatbox sessions as well as working on his debut beat tape..
